Grab a can of biscuit dough and let’s create homemade doughnuts in a hurry. Trust me these doughnuts and doughnut bites are just as good as the doughnuts you can buy at your favorite donut shop. A quick and easy homemade donut recipe that is your ticket to warm and fresh doughnuts any time of the day.

Growing up we would have fresh doughnuts like this on occasion, and it was always a delight coming into the kitchen to the smell of homemade doughnuts. At first, I would just sit and wait and as I grew older, I was taught how to make them. They are so simple to make, and I love to make these same doughnuts and doughnut holes for my kids as they were growing up.

Sometimes we would eat them plain, other times sprinkle powdered sugar or even roll in some cinnamon and sugar. No matter how you make these donuts, they will truly melt in your mouth. If you are not a huge baker, this is a super straightforward recipe for you to make homemade doughnuts with Pillsbury Grand Biscuits.

Tips for Making Homemade Doughnuts

Donut holes | I used a shot glass to cut the hole in the center of my donuts. Now you can buy a really small cookie cutter to use that is a circle. This will give you a small donut hole that you can toss in and fry as well.

Check Oil | I use a candy thermometer when I fry because it is so easy for the oil to get too hot or not be hot enough. I try to heat to 350 degrees. I do a test as well to drop one donut in and see if it bubbles, if it does the oil is ready.

Spacing | Make sure you allow spacing for the donuts. If you overfill your pan for frying it will lower the temperature too much of the oil and your donuts won’t be golden brown. Another thing is you will have a hard time flipping them if there is no room.

These homemade doughnuts are so simple to make. You and your family will really love them. The doughnuts are best when served warm fresh out from frying.

Ingredients

  • 1 Can of Pillsbury Grands Homestyle Original Refrigerated Biscuits
  • 2 cups Vegetable Cooking Oil
  • 1 ½ Powdered Sugar
  • +
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons Water
  • Or
  • ½ Cup of Granulated Sugar
  • +
  • 2 tablespoons of Ground Cinnamon
Instructions

Heat vegetable oil on medium-high heat in a deep fry pan. I use a smaller 4 quart pan to preserve oil (the wider your pan, the more oil you will have to use to deep fry)
Open your can of biscuits and lay flat on a cutting board. Take your shot glass or baby bottle and press the open end in down on the dough to cut out a hole in the middle, do this for all 8 biscuits, keep cut out middles to make doughnut holes.
By the time you get done prepping your biscuits, your oil should be ready. To test drop one of the biscuit middles in the hot oil, if it bubbles it is ready for you to fill the oil. Do not over fill, you don’t want them to overlap.
Let them cook for about 1 minute on each side (should be golden brown when you remove them from oil.
