  • Rice Krispies Cereal: Pick a crisped rice cereal of your choice.
  • Marshmallows: You will need marshmallows for binding the rice krispies together and to give them a shape.
  • Unsalted Butter: Butter will prevent the marshmallows from sticking to the pan. You can choose either dairy butter or plant-based butter.

STORAGE TIPS

  1. Can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  2. Don’t put them in the refrigerator or freezer because they will get hard.
  3. These krispies are best when eaten fresh, reheating them will cause them to melt and get soggy.
  4. The Halloween rice krispie treats are not freezer friendly so consume them within three days.

TOP TIPS FOR HALLOWEEN RICE KRISPIES

  • Keep the flame on medium-low so that marshmallows don’t get over cooked.
  • If you use old or stale marshmallows, it will take them longer to melt and harder to mix with the rice krispies.
  • Do not use stale or soggy rice krispies. They will not hold the shape and will not be crunchy. A complete waste of potentially good Halloween rice krispie treats.
  • If you are shaping these Halloween rice krispies with your hands, spray a little non-stick cooking spray on your hands. The krispies will not stick to your hands.
  • Remove the krispies from heat as soon as they’re fully coated with marshmallow mixture otherwise they will become too hard.

FAQ

Why are my rice crispy treats soggy?

If you’re not using stale rice krispies and your Halloween rice krispie treats are still soggy, there’s a reason. You’re pressing them into the pan too soon. Pour the mixture into a pan and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then press it down with a spatula.

How long should rice krispie treats cool before cutting?

Let the marshmallow and krispies mixture cool down for at least 30 minutes. Once they’re completely cooled down, cut them into desired shapes.

Can I use old marshmallows for rice krispie treats?

Don’t use stale marshmallows for this rice krispie treat recipe. They take longer to melt and don’t stretch enough to cover the rice krispies evenly. For Halloween rice krispie treats use a fresh bag of marshmallows.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 1 10 oz bag marshmallows (about 5 1/2 cups)
  • 3 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup each of candy melts orange, green, or purple for Halloween
  • 1/2 cup Halloween sprinkles and candy eyes
Instructions

In a large saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.
Remove from heat. Add Rice Krispies cereal and stir until fully coated with the marshmallow mixture. Add Vanilla extract and mix well.
Press the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch pan using a buttered spatula or wax paper.
Let sit for about 30 minutes before cutting into squares or rectangles.
Meanwhile, all the colors of candy melts in separate bowls in a microwave until smooth. Dip each Rice Krispie treat halfway into the melted candy, using a butter knife to smooth the coating so it’s even.
Place the coated treats on parchment paper. While the coating is still warm, gently press candy eyes into place and sprinkle on halloween sprinkles if you desire. Allow the treats to set for about an hour before serving.
Tips
  • Don’t overpack the pan – press the mixture in gently. Packing it down too firmly can make the bars dense instead of light.
  • Storage – keep treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, wrap individually and freeze for up to 6 weeks.
  • Fresh marshmallows make the best treats – older or stale marshmallows don’t melt as smoothly and can make the bars hard.
