These protein-packed chicken and cottage cheese meatballs are incredibly tender, juicy, and flavourful - based on all the instagram recipes right now! Mixing cottage cheese directly into the lean minced chicken locks in moisture, ensuring the meatballs stay melt-in-your-mouth soft rather than drying out during cooking. Simmered in a rich, garlicky marinara sauce infused with Italian herbs, they absorb the bright tomato notes while adding a creamy richness to the pan. Served hot over a bed of pasta, grains, or fresh crusty bread, this wholesome dish offers a comforting, nutrient-dense spin on a classic Italian favorite that the whole family will love.

Chicken and Cottage Cheese Meatballs
Recipe details
Ingredients
- Chicken Meatballs: 500g chicken mince
- 200g small-curd cottage cheese
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Tomato Sauce:
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 can (800g) crushed tomatoes (or passata)
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp chili flakes (optional)
- salt and pepper to taste
- Garnish: Fresh basil leaves, extra grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Mix the meatball mixture: In a large bowl, combine the chicken mince, cottage cheese, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until just combined (avoid overmixing to keep them light).
- Shape the meatballs: Dampen your hands slightly with water and roll the mixture into 16–20 evenly sized meatballs, placing them on a clean plate.
- Build the sauce base: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or deep pan over medium heat, add the minced garlic, and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Simmer the tomato sauce: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, dried oregano, chili flakes, salt, and black pepper, stirring well and bringing the sauce to a gentle simmer.
- Add the meatballs: Carefully nestle the raw meatballs into the simmering tomato sauce, making sure they are partially submerged, then cover the skillet with a lid.
- Cook through: Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer covered for 15–18 minutes, turning the meatballs once halfway through, until internal temperature reaches 75°C (165°F).
- Garnish and serve: Remove from heat, let stand for a couple of minutes, then top with fresh basil leaves and grated Parmesan before serving.
