Spicy Thai Basil Dish

If you like spicy food this dish is for you! This dish has a beautiful aromatic smell from using such delicious and fresh ingredients.
Thai chili peppers are extremely spicy. The green ones carry more heat than the red. If you are unable to find these, regular chili peppers will work as well. The spice level can be adjusted depending on preference. I can’t handle much heat so I opted for a low amount of hot peppers. But it still had quite a kick to it - for me at least!

Spicy Thai Basil Dish
Recipe details
Ingredients
- 1 cup Jasmine rice
- 1.5 cups water
- 1 lb ground meat
- 1 green Thai chili pepper
- 1 red Thai chili pepper
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 tbsp freshly minced ginger
- 2 scallions
- 1 cup of chopped green beans
- 1 tbsp canola oil
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 4 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tsp fish sauce
- 1 handful of Thai basil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp chili flakes
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 2 eggs to top the dish
- black & white sesame seeds to garnish (optional)
Instructions
For the Rice
- Bring 1.5 cups of water to a boil
- Add 1 cup of rinsed jasmine rice and cover with a lid. Reduce heat to simmer.
- Cook for approximately 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until all of the water is absorbed and rice is tender.
- Fluff the rice with a fork then set aside.
For the Turkey
- Finely chop 1 green Thai chili pepper, 1 red Thai chili pepper, 3 cloves of garlic, 2 tsp of fresh ginger, white ends of 2 scallions
- Slice the green beans horizontally into small pieces
- Heat canola oil in a wok or pan, then add the prepped ingredients
- Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili flakes
- Sauté for 1 minute then add the ground turkey
- Break up the meat using a spoon or spatula utensil and let it start to brown
- Once the meat is almost cooked, drain any excess grease from the pan
- Bring the pan of ground turkey back to the stove and add the brown sugar, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and fish sauce
- Let the meat caramelize in the sauce for at least 5 minutes, then stir in a handful of Thai basil
Plating
- Make a bed of white rice
- Cover the rice with the ground turkey
- Top with a fried or poached egg
- Garnish with green scallion tips and sesame seeds
Tips
- Ground turkey can be substituted for ground chicken, beef, or pork
- Thai basil can be substituted for regular basil
- Thai chili peppers can be substituted for regular chili peppers
