If chickpeas are your favorite part of this salad, you're in good company. This same lemony, legume-forward approach shows up in my Chickpea Cucumber Feta Salad, and if you ever want to swap the chickpeas for something else, the Italian White Bean Salad uses the same vinaigrette with cannellini beans instead. For another protein-and-legume combination with the same bright, herby spirit, my Lentil Salad is worth bookmarking too.

This salad is flexible enough to serve a few different ways depending on the occasion. Scoop it over greens alongside our Jerusalem Salad for a light, Mediterranean-inspired lunch spread, or drizzle it with our lemon tahini sauce for a different dressing. For something more filling on a warm day, pair it with a bowl of Spanish Gazpacho for an easy, no-cook summer lunch.

Key Ingredients

You will need the following ingredients to make this chickpea and tuna salad:

A variety of labeled ingredients for a chickpea tuna salad are displayed on a white surface, including tomatoes, cucumber, onion, garlic, tuna, olive oil, salt, pepper, chickpeas, capers, lemon, Dijon mustard, celery, dill, mint, and parsley.
  • Tuna, one can in olive oil and one can in water - This recipe uses one can of oil-packed tuna and one can of water-packed tuna rather than two cans of oil-packed. In testing, that combination made the salad noticeably less oily than using two oil-packed cans, while still keeping enough richness that the salad doesn't taste lean or thin. Draining both cans well before flaking matters, especially the water-packed can, so the salad doesn't turn watery once the vinaigrette is added.
  • Chickpeas - Chickpeas add the fiber and heartiness that turn this from a topping into an actual lunch. During testing, rinsing the chickpeas well made sure that the leftover (aquafaba) water from the can didn't make the vinaigrette taste muddy. If you're looking for another chickpea-forward recipe, my Mediterranean Orzo Salad is a the next best salad.
  • Fresh mint, dill, and parsley - This three-herb combination is what separates this recipe from a standard tuna salad. Mint especially is not a common addition to tuna salad, but it keeps the whole dish tasting lighter and more Mediterranean rather than heavy. Testing this with just parsley alone made the salad taste flatter; the mint is what gives it lift.
  • Capers (optional) - Capers bring a briny punch that a squeeze of lemon alone can't replicate, though they're an optional add here for anyone who isn't a fan or wants to skip the brine. If using them, rinse the capers first and taste before adding any salt, since the brine carries plenty of salt on its own.

Variations

  • Chickpeas - If you don't have chickpeas on hand: cannellini beans work well but soften the texture slightly.
  • Herbs - Dill and parsley alone still make a good salad, just less bright.
  • No Dijon - Whole grain mustard works, though the vinaigrette will look a bit different.
  • Creamier - You can fold in two tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt after dressing.
  • Cheese & Olives - Add crumbled feta and a small handful of chopped Kalamata olives.
  • Spicy - A pinch of red pepper flakes in the vinaigrette wakes the whole thing up.

How To Make Chickpea Tuna Salad: Step-By-Step

Here are some quick visual instructions. Remember that full instructions with the exact ingredients are in the printable recipe card:

A glass mixing bowl with a yellowish liquid mixture and a metal whisk, seen from above-perfect for prepping ingredients like those in a chickpea tuna salad. The number 1 is in a white circle in the bottom left corner.

Step 1: Make the vinaigrette. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, and ground pepper. Set this aside. You will taste for salt once the salad is made.

A clear glass bowl containing flaked, light brown canned tuna for a chickpea tuna salad is placed on a white surface. A white circle with the number 2 is in the lower left corner of the image.

Step 2: Flake in the cans of tuna and add the chickpeas into a large bowl. Toss gently. The goal is loose chunks of tuna, not a completely broken-down mixture.

A glass bowl filled with chopped cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, parsley, dill, and mint sits ready to be mixed into a fresh chickpea tuna salad. A white circle with the number 3 is in the bottom left corner.

Step 3: Combine the cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, celery, parsley, mint, dill, and capers, if using.

A glass bowl filled with a vibrant chickpea tuna salad-tuna, chickpeas, cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, and parsley-all brought together as yellow dressing is poured over the fresh ingredients.

Step 4: Pour the vinaigrette over everything and toss gently until evenly coated. Taste, and add salt if needed.

Helpful Tips

  • Drain both cans of tuna well before flaking, pressing the oil-packed can against the side of the can (or using a fine-mesh strainer) and patting the water-packed can dry. This combination is what keeps the salad from turning greasy while still tasting satisfying.
  • Taste before adding all the salt. Rinsed capers still carry plenty of brine on their own.

Gwen's Pro Tip

If you're prepping more than a few hours ahead, hold back a tablespoon of the vinaigrette and toss it in right before serving. Chickpeas and tuna soak up dressing faster than a leafy salad does, so this keeps the texture from turning heavy by the time you're ready to eat.

A spoonful of chickpea tuna salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, herbs, and parsley is held above a bowl containing the same colorful salad.
Chickpea Tuna Salad FAQ's

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes. In fact, it tastes even better the next day because the flavors have time to develop.

How long does it keep in the fridge?

Three to four days in an airtight container.

Why does this recipe use one can of oil-packed tuna and one can of water-packed tuna?

It's a balance: using one of each keeps the salad noticeably less oily than two oil-packed cans, without losing richness. You can use two cans of either if you prefer, though the texture will shift slightly.
