Who needs box hamburger helper mix, when you have this easy and delicious recipe for homemade hamburger helper. I have never been a huge fan of store bought hamburger helper, but my family loves it. So I decided to go out looking for a homemade version. Man, this recipe does NOT disappoint. It is comfort in a bowl, and bonus...my kids and husband LOVE it.

This is an easy, one pan meal that is perfect for busy week nights. Simply sauté the meat and onion in a pan with garlic, make a roux with flour and beef broth, and then dump the tomato sauce, seasonings, and pasta in to let simmer for about 10-15 minutes.

Finish it off with a little half and half and cheese for a creamy, savory comfort meal the entire family will love.

You will never buy another box of hamburger helper again after trying this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef, or ground turkey
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth, or chicken broth
  • 1, (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 8 oz small pasta shells, or small elbow pasta (half of a normal 1lb box of pasta.)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream, or half and half
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions

In a large sauté pan, cook the ground beef or turkey over medium high heat until cooked through. Remove cooked ground beef from pan and set aside.
Reduce the heat to medium, add 1 tbsp olive oil if needed, chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until softened.
Add the flour and stir to cook for about 1 minute, slowly whisk in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a boil.
Add tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic salt, paprika, salt and pepper, and pasta stirring to combine.
Bring to a simmer, cover and cook 10-15 minutes or until pasta is cooked through. Add more beef broth if needed for the pasta.
Add in the half and half, and shredded cheddar cheese and stir to combine.
Add beef back in and cook for 2-3 minutes until heated through.
