Who needs box hamburger helper mix, when you have this easy and delicious recipe for homemade hamburger helper. I have never been a huge fan of store bought hamburger helper, but my family loves it. So I decided to go out looking for a homemade version. Man, this recipe does NOT disappoint. It is comfort in a bowl, and bonus...my kids and husband LOVE it.
This is an easy, one pan meal that is perfect for busy week nights. Simply sauté the meat and onion in a pan with garlic, make a roux with flour and beef broth, and then dump the tomato sauce, seasonings, and pasta in to let simmer for about 10-15 minutes.
Finish it off with a little half and half and cheese for a creamy, savory comfort meal the entire family will love.
You will never buy another box of hamburger helper again after trying this recipe.

Recipe details
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef, or ground turkey
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth, or chicken broth
- 1, (8 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 8 oz small pasta shells, or small elbow pasta (half of a normal 1lb box of pasta.)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream, or half and half
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a large sauté pan, cook the ground beef or turkey over medium high heat until cooked through. Remove cooked ground beef from pan and set aside.
- Reduce the heat to medium, add 1 tbsp olive oil if needed, chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until softened.
- Add the flour and stir to cook for about 1 minute, slowly whisk in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Add tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic salt, paprika, salt and pepper, and pasta stirring to combine.
- Bring to a simmer, cover and cook 10-15 minutes or until pasta is cooked through. Add more beef broth if needed for the pasta.
- Add in the half and half, and shredded cheddar cheese and stir to combine.
- Add beef back in and cook for 2-3 minutes until heated through.
