Do you call it hotdish or casserole? Here in Minnesota, most people call it hotdish! I grew up eating all sorts of different hotdishes and now as I get older, I’m realizing my mom probably made them so often because it’s so easy just to throw a bunch of things together and call it a meal! One of my favorite meals growing up was my mom’s spaghetti hotdish. Of course I can never make it quite like hers, so instead I’ve been playing around with different ingredients and I have created this delicious, cheesy spaghetti hotdish. Hopefully my future kids will enjoy it as much as I still enjoy my mom’s!
Cheesy Spaghetti Hotdish
Recipe details
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/4 cup diced yellow onion
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 clove minced garlic
- 3 oz tomato paste
- 1 jar marinara sauce
- 4 oz cream cheese
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp basil
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- Pinch of red pepper flakes
- 8 oz noodles
- 1/2 cup mozzarella
- 1/4 cup parmesan
Instructions
- On a skillet over medium heat, add ground beef and 1/8 cup onion. (The other 1/8 cup of onion will be used in the sauce.)
- Chop up the ground beef and season with salt and pepper.
- Cook until no longer pink.
- In a saucepan over medium low heat, add the olive oil, the other 1/8 cup of the onions, and the garlic.
- Cook until onions are translucent and garlic is fragrant.
- Then add the tomato paste, marinara sauce, cream cheese, Italian seasoning, basil, oregano, and red pepper flakes.
- While that’s simmering, boil the noodles according to directions.
- Once the noodles are done, combine them with the sauce and the hamburger.
- Then place in a casserole dish, top with cheese, and bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes.
Tips
- You can add more onion to both the ground beef and the sauce if you’d like, or leave it out completely. I don’t like a lot of onions but I do like some of the flavor it brings so I just add a little bit.
- Ground beef can be replaced with ground bison, ground pork, or ground turkey. You could also make a meatless version if you’d prefer.
- Seasonings are approximate. Measure with your heart!
