This rich and creamy Avocado Chocolate Pudding is the perfect guilt-free dessert. Made with ripe avocados and natural ingredients, it’s gluten free, refined sugar free, vegan and dairy-free, and, despite what you may initially think, it’s incredibly delicious!

After developing this recipe, I was cleaning up my studio and dishes. I had this glass cup of pudding sitting on the counter, perfectly swirled with a scoop of greek yogurt and cacao nibs sprinkled on top. My teenage son had just come in from school and asked if it was up for grabs and I told him to go for it. After shoveling it down he asked what was in it, they always do because they know that I just don’t make straight up sugared pudding. I went on to tell him that it was Avocado Chocolate Pudding and you could almost see his eyes bulge out! And then once the shock settled he agreed it was, in fact, really good. So, the question here is, do you indulge that information or is it best to keep some things to yourself? Avocado just doesn’t seem like a dessert ingredient, because it’s actually not. But here it provides an incredible cream base with zero taste of avocado. Also, what an amazing source of healthy fat as well. When you are intentional about ingredients this dessert has it all.

What Is Avocado Chocolate Pudding?

Avocado chocolate pudding is a plant-based dessert made by blending ripe avocados with cacao powder, a pure maple syrup, and a splash of non-dairy milk. The result? A velvety smooth, mousse-like pudding that’s rich in flavor and completely dairy-free.

This recipe is:

  • Vegan and gluten-free
  • Refined sugar-free
  • High in fiber, healthy fats and rich in minerals
  • Ready in 5 minutes

Ingredients You’ll Need

For this easy avocado chocolate pudding, you only need a handful of wholesome ingredients:

  • avocados – The riper, the better for ultimate creaminess.
  • cacao powder – I always reach for cacao powder. It’s naturally rich in minerals whereas cocoa powder is pretty much stripped of them.
  • maple syrup – Adjust to your preferred sweetness. You can also use agave or honey if you prefer.
  • coconut milk – Or your milk of preference.
  • nut butter– I used almond butter, but peanut, cashew, tahini or sunflower would all be great choices. Read your label when choosing nut butters, many sneak in unnecessary sugars and oils.
  • vanilla extract
  • sea salt– Brings in that salted chocolate taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is avocado chocolate pudding actually good?

Yes! When blended with cacao powder, maple syrup and nut butter, the avocado becomes silky and neutral in flavor. The cacao dominates, creating a rich and satisfying dessert.

Can I make avocado chocolate pudding ahead of time?

Absolutely. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. It may thicken slightly, so give it a stir before serving.

Does it taste like avocado?

Not at all! The chocolate and vanilla mask the avocado flavor completely, leaving just the creamy texture behind.
