One of my favorite drinks to enjoy in the winter is apple cider but it's almost always sold out near me so I've resorted to making them homemade! Apple cider is the perfect thing to make when you have extra apples. This recipe is super flavorful and is perfect for a cozy pick-me-up! It's also incredibly easy to make, even though it may take a while to cook (totally worth it though!). All you do is throw some apples, oranges and spices into a pot of water, allow for it to simmer for a couple of hours and ta-da: the perfect apple cider! Happy cooking!
Homemade Apple Cider
Recipe details
Ingredients
- 10 large apples, quartered
- 2 oranges, halved
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 1 whole nutmeg
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp ground clover
- 15 cups water
Instructions
- Over medium heat, add the apples, oranges, cinnamon sticks, spices, and brown sugar. Pour in the water and bring to a boil, then reduce heat and allow to simmer for 2 hours, covered.
- After 2 hours, remove the orange halves, then use a wooden spoon to mash the apples. Allow to simmer uncovered for 1 more hour .
- Once the hour is up, pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a large mixing bowl, pressing the apples to squeeze all the juices out. Discard the solids.
- Serve warm.
Tips
- If you want to save the apple cider for later, move to a sealable container after allowing it to reach room temperature and refrigerate for up to one week!

I would name this recipe apple punch.
In my opinion Cider is an alcoholic wine made of apple juice, fermentated with special yeast, which lasts several weeks.
I come from New England. There are Apple orchards everywhere. They all make cider from the bruised apples using a press. It is not an alcoholic beverage. Hard cider or "wine" made from apples is a totally different process which requires fermentation.
